Lexie is considered to be one of Australia's leading artists. She prefers the larger traditional styles but does like to make smaller bears and the occasional whimsical creation just for fun. Two of her bears are featured in a leading Japanese Teddy Bear Museum and her work has appeared in a number of authoritave bear books.
Lexie says it is difficult to write a list of achievements because so many people have been involved in the success of Haworth Cottage Bears.
Instead she will list some of the memorable moments throughout her bearmaking career.
1. The first bear ever sold. His name was Donoghue. He was sold to Philip and Sally Cornell. A lovely couple. Philip, a professional commercial artist was later commissioned to design the logo for The Camson's range of The Bears Of Haworth Cottage teds. There is a photo of Lexie with Donoghue on this page.
2. The first encouragement and advice from another artist. A wonderful American lady, Karla Mahanna . Karla was a judge at the first competition Lexie ever entered.
3. The purchase of Illaroo (Aboriginal word ,meaning Day) by Rosemary and Paul Volpp, well known American collectors and owners of 'Happy'. At the time the most expensive Steiff bear ever sold at Christie's Auction House in London.
4. The support and encouragement from David Worland and creating the special edition of one hundred 32 inch bears in his name. This bear became the most well known bear of Lexie's He appeared on the front cover of the 1999 UK Teddy Bear Guide and was produced as a Colourbox figurine. There is a photo of Worland on this page, in the Gallery and in the Special Editions section of the website.
5. Making a special bear for Free the Bears Fund to raffle. With the wonderful effort contributed by the volunteer sellers he raised over twelve thousand dollars to help save the Sunbears.
6. The support and promotion from the Teddy Bear Shop group.
7. Lexie's first pattern range marketed by Gerry's Teddy and Craft Designs.
8. The support from Mike and Jacki Brooks of Bear Facts Review with regular appearances in the magazine . Worland appeared on the front cover of the Number nine issue of Bear Facts. Arthur also appeared on the front cover of Bear Facts Review. Arthur is the signature bear of the website.
10. Being commissioned to design a special range of The Bears of Haworth Cottage for overseas production by Camsons Trading Pty. Ltd. This range of bears and gollies was marketed in Australia and overseas for almost four years until the company changed hands in 2000.
11. Being commissioned to produce Anniversary and commemorative bears for David Jones Pty Ltd. for four years. David Jones is Australia's most prestigious Department store chain. Each year Lexie personally produced fifty special originals and one thousand copies were manufactured overseas for sales in the stores throughout Australia
12. Lexie was the first Artist to be invited to appear regularly on TVSN as a special guest to promote the marketing of the Camson's range of Haworth Cottage Bears. Though requested, her current commitments and workload prevent her from being able to retail her originals on the TVSN Home Shopping Network.
13. Two very successful one person exhibitions at Morpeth and the Gold Coast held in conjunction with Teddy Bears Downstairs and The Teddy Bear Shop Robina.
14. The many memorable and fun workshops organised by Lexie's retail outlets.
15. The Teddy Bear and Doll Shows. Meeting her collectors and getting together with other Artist friends.
16. The exciting all expenses paid invitation by Mr. Gunther Hoffer of Schulte Mohair to attend their wonderful 100 year celebrations in Germany and the unforgettable ten days spent touring Germany and Switzerland with Gerry and Kevin Warlow afterwards. This was the most incredible surprise of her bearmaking career. She was invited for the contribution made promoting Schulte mohair. Lexie uses it almost exclusively for her bears.
17. Visiting the amazing Puppenhausen Museum in Basel, Switzerland. She saw so many of the old Steiff bears there with the look she continually strives to achieve. As a lover of old toys it was a dream to see so many at the one time presented in such a spectacular setting.
18. Winning the coveted Artist Bear of the Year Award at the 2002 Premier Bear Affair with her 26inch aged bear, Arthur, the closest yet she has come to the old Steiff look. This was especially significant because it was the 100 year Anniversary of the Teddy Bear. Arthur is the signature bear of the website.
19. The bittersweet memories of Trevor Coates of Teddy Bears Downstairs, Morpeth and Carol Robertson of The Teddy Bear Shop, Robina. Lexie lost these two dear friends to cancer. Both Carol and Trevor were not only staunch promoters of her work but valued as close friends. They will always be sadly missed by both Lexie and her husband John.
Lexie finishes by saying that by far the most treasured time of her bearmaking career was the few months she had the privilege of having her son Adam work with her. She learned a lot about his opinions on many subjects and really came to respect him as a person. A very valuable and special time.
She emphasises that not one of these memorable moments would have occurred if it hadn't been for the support of her husband, family, bear collectors, customers and friends.
